Zakynthos is the southernmost of the Ionian islands and has approximately 41,500 inhabitants and a surface area of 406km². The island is almost triangular in shape, with two beautifully green mountainous promontories extending into the sea to form the spectacular huge bay of Laganas. Breathtaking views, lush and fertile rugged mountains and picturesque cliff-backed beaches caressed by brilliant turquoise waters, many accessible only by boat, dominate the north and north-west of Zante. The island is very fertile and has a thriving agricultural sector.

The birthplace of revered poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote Greece’s national anthem, the island offers no shortage of things to do and see. Take a boat trip to the famous Shipwreck beach, swim in the Blue Caves, watch the sunset from the cliffs of Keri or Skinari Cape, listen to the islanders’ serenades (kantadhes, traditional songs), and see the endangered caretta-caretta sea turtles lay their eggs in the islands white sands and the well-protected monachus monachus seal frolic in the waves.

Due to the soft sand and clear waters, many beaches are protected as the largest breeding grounds for the endangered loggerhead Caretta- Caretta in Europe. If you’re lucky enough to witness this spectacle, please don’t disturb these beautiful creatures or their eggs.
